Scope and Content

This series is divided into two subseries: OS (Outer Space) and OS001 (Space Research and Development). The material is arranged by alphanumeric subcode and thereunder by case file number.

OS (Outer Space) contains letters to the President, responses from the administration and background material regarding space policy. Topics include defense against near earth objects and U.S. national space policy.

OS001 (Space Research and Development) contains letters, speeches (and drafts thereof), biographical information, programs, talking points, reports, and petitions. Topics include the space shuttle fleet, the International Space Station, the space shuttle Columbia accident, the Hubble Telescope, and the future of the U.S. space program and policy. Included in the series are President Bush's statement on the loss of the space shuttle Columbia, the final report of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board, NASA's "Implementation Plan for Return to Flight and Beyond," a draft editorial from Office of Science and Technology Policy Director John Marburger, III, and a petition urging President Bush to reinstate the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission.
